Port of Seattle Fire Department is a great place to be!
Port of Seattle Firefighters provide aircraft rescue firefighting, structural firefighting and emergency medical
services at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. There are also opportunities on our technical rescue team
and hazardous materials team, which responds independently and with Zone 3’s response team. The
department also has a very busy Fire Prevention Division and Training Division.
The firefighters on all four suppression shifts work and train closely together. The crews rotate rig assignments
regularly and get to know every aspect of the job. Opportunities for Subject Matter Experts and special projects
allow members to follow their interests highlight their talents. Working in close proximity allows for strong
comradery, and a good deal of fun.
Growth and Opportunity at Port of Seattle Fire Department
Port of Seattle Fire Department is a busy and continuously growing department. The department was established
in 1955 and has changed a great deal over its long history (link to history page). Even though it has a very
small geographical jurisdiction, 51 million passengers passed through the airport in 2019. This department of
100 people is here to protect the airport, its passengers, employees, and properties.
In the last 20 years the fire department had grown by more than 40% to keep up with the expansion of the airport.
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport experienced significant passenger growth leading up to the pandemic and
now that we are coming out of it, there’s every indication the trend will continue. The airport just completed a
major expansion of its International Arrivals Facility – and there’s no sign the growth will stop.
